Barracuda Labs vient de publier un premier rapport sur les réseaux sociaux (Twitter en particulier) et la Cybercriminalité.

Le rapport aborde les problèmes de sécurité sur Twitter (et Réseaux sociaux), les tendances en terme de cybercriminalité et les spams et virus.

Voici quelques points marquants du rapport en ce qui concerne Twitter :

-Seulement 21% des utilisateurs sont des VRAIS utilisateurs (les autres étant du spam et robots)

-L’âge d’or de Twitter : entre novembre 2008 et avril 2009 quand 27 utilisateurs du Top 50 -incluant des célébrités- se sont créés un compte Twitter.
-Explosion du taux de croissance de Twitter pendant cette même période : de 2,02% en novembre 2008 à 21,17% en avril 2009.
-Fort impact des célébrités sur les réseaux sociaux qui ont incité leur fans à se créer des comptes.

-Le Taux de cybercriminalité sur Twitter a été stable (2006 = 1,2% ; 2007 = 1,7%) et puis il a explosé de 66% pendant la période d’âge d’or de Twitter (passant de 3,36% à 12% en octobre 2009). Les attaques se sont faites de plus en plus fréquentes.
-Les cybercriminels suivent la masse des utilisateurs et le taux d’activité malveillante augmente en fonction de la popularité des réseaux sociaux.

-Taux d’utilisation de Twitter : de plus en plus d’activité dans les comptes en 2009.
-26% des utilisateurs ont au moins 10 followers , une croissance de + 30% par rapport à juin 2009.
-40% des utilisateurs suivent au moins 10 personnes, une augmentation de 18% par rapport à juin 2009.

L’étude aborde aussi les tendances dans les Malwares et les menaces par Email :

Côté Malwares en 2009, les pirates ont redoublé toujours plus d’ingéniosité. Il y a eu 31 % d’exploitations humaines via Phishing et faux logiciels, et 69 % d’exploitations dans des failles logicielles.  (illustration ci-dessous)

Côté messagerie en ligne, Barracuda Labs dit avoir étudié 700 milliards de mails en 2009, sur lesquels :

• 92.24% étaient du spam
• 0.07% étaient infectés
• 1.12% étaient suspects
• 6.57% étaient des emails légitimes

6.57 % cela signifie qu’un seul email sur 15 est légitime, tout le reste n’est que spam… incroyable.

Google Reader Play est une nouvelle manière de lire vos flux RSS sur Google Reader.

“Dans Google Reader Play, les éléments sont présentés un à un et chaque élément est affiché en plein écran. Après avoir lu un article, cliquez simplement sur la flèche à côté pour passer à la suivante.” explique Google.

Une fonctionnalité qui peut être intéressante, c’est le fait que les images et vidéos sont automatiquement agrandies afin de coller parfaitement à la taille de votre écran.

En revanche, les éléments affichés sur Google Reader Play, de base, ne sont pas vos flux mais les éléments des listes de partages. Suivant vos appréciations (favoris, partage et autres) Google améliorera les recommandations.

Google launched a new service today in from its Labs called Google Reader Play. It is a more visual way to browse through the most popular items being saved and shared on Google Reader. When you launch it, you are presented with a large photo, video, or text excerpt on the main part of the screen, and can flip through by clicking on arrows or selecting an item from the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen.

Google Reader Play doesn’t require you to sign in, but if you do then you can star, share, and like items, and it starts to recommend things to you based on what your friends share, star, and like in Google Reader. The user interface seems to borrow a lot from StumbleUpon, with its concept of randomly flicking through the best stuff on the Web. In particular, it’s very similar to StumbleVideo, except it includes more than just videos. It is very image-heavy. The user interface reminds me of some elements of enjosythin.gs as well in the way that it presents images and text excerpts in a blown-up manner. The arrows are very Fast Flip, another Labs experiment for the Google News in making magazine and newspaper articles more visually browsable.

Like many of its other recent efforts, especially with Buzz, Google Reader Play is an attempt to encourage more direct sharing and to capture that sharing data. More and more Website referral traffic is coming from sharing service such as Twitter and Facebook. Google wants to be in the sharing game as well.

This year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival is rapidly approaching. Beginning with the Interactive Media events on March 12th, Austin, Texas will be the place to connect with the brightest in tech and media and get the scoop on some exciting new ventures.

Google Reader Play, c’est le nom de la nouvelle vue qu’offre Google Reader. Quelle est la différence entre Play et la vue traditionnelle? Et bien, lorsque vous utilisez Play, l’information s’affiche sous la forme d’un diaporama. L’accent est mis sur les photos et les vidéos présentes dans un billet.

Vous n’êtes pas obligé d’utiliser Google Reader pour accéder à Play. Cependant, si le lecteur RSS de Google est l’une de vos destinations quotidiennes, Play devrait en théorie vous offrir du contenu qui vous intéressera. Ce service analyse ce que vous ajoutez à votre liste de suivi et le contenu que vous et vos contacts partagez sur ce service.

Google Reader Play n’est en fait rien de plus qu’une nouvelle vue. Malgré son interface minimaliste, Play offre tout de même quelques fonctionnalités de base. Il est possible d’ajouter du contenu à la liste de suivi et de le partager avec votre réseau.

Google just launched a new Google Labs product for Google Reader: Google Reader Play. Reader Play is a new, highly visual way to browse your Google Reader subscriptions that is somewhat reminiscent of Google's Fast Flip. It replaces the busy Google Reader interface with an interface that focuses on a single story. Whenever a post includes videos or images, Play with highlight these and give you the option to read more of the text as well. This new interface allows you to browse through the feeds you already subscribe to, but Google Reader Play also emphasizes Google Reader's ability to recommend items from around the web for you based on your preferences.

Big on Recommendations

As Google notes, Play will learn from your preferences, based on the articles you read and "like." You can also choose from a set of categories (tech, entertainment, arts, business, etc.) and Google Reader will create a personalized stream of items just for you. According to Google, Play uses the same algorithm as the Recommended Items feed in Google Reader.

Play will even work if you don't have a Google account. While you can't star, like or share items, you can still browse interesting posts based on the categories you choose. This should make it a good tool for those users who don't want to go through the effort of setting up a feed reader and subscribing to hundreds of different feeds.

To use Google Reader Play, just head over here or look for "View in Reader Play" in the folder settings in Google Reader. You can switch stories by using your arrow keys or choose the slideshow mode that will automatically forward to the next story after a few second.

Think we'd all be better off if HTML5 could somehow instantly replace Flash overnight? Not necessarily, according to a set of comparisons from Jan Ozer of the Streaming Learning Center website, which found that while HTML5 did come out ahead in many respects, it wasn't exactly a clear winner. The tests weren't completely scientific, but they did find that HTML5 clearly performed better than Flash 10 or 10.1 in Safari on a Mac, although the differences were less clear cut in Google Chrome or Firefox. On the other hand, Flash more than held its own on Windows, and Flash Player 10.1 was actually 58% more efficient than HTML5 in Google Chrome on the Windows system tested. As you may have deduced, one of the big factors accounting for that discrepancy is that Flash is able to take advantage of GPU hardware acceleration in Windows, while Adobe is effectively cut out of the loop on Mac -- something it has complained about quite publicly. According to Ozer, the differences between HTML5 and Flash playback on a Mac could be virtually eliminated if Flash could make use of GPU acceleration. Hit up the link below for all the numbers.

Google has just released an alternative player for Google Reader that gives those with a penchant for browsing news the ability to do so in an image-heavy, TV-like fashion.

Dubbed Google Reader Play, the new tool is an experimental Google Labs project that presents stories one by one — based on their Recommend Items technology — using enlarged photos and auto-playing videos (in lieu of text) on a black backdrop. Viewers can redefine categories and star, like or share stories, with those behaviors further contributing to what Google displays.

Google Reader Play could be both an entertainment utility for browsing the web and a complement to your Google Reader experience. Actions that you take in Reader or Reader Play are shared between the two products, and the recommendations in Reader Play are personalized based on the people you’re following in Reader.

Google Reader Play is certainly eye-catching, but it’s more pop than it is substance. In fact, given that Google Reader appeals to fairly narrow audience today, we believe the product was intended to up the entertainment factor and introduce Reader-esque features to a much broader set of users.

It’s nice to look at and worth a try; whether or not that’s enough to attract the attention of those outside the web/tech realm remains to be seen. We do, however, think that Google Reader Play on an iPad or actual TV set, say via something like Boxee Box, would be worth watching.

The Internet is in the running for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed. Championed by Wired magazine in Italy, the nomination has been backed by OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte.

Italian Wired suggests that the Internet should receive the highly regarded prize for helping to advance “dialogue, debate and consensus.”

The nomination from Wired has been dismissed by some as a publicity stunt — and the support of long-time Wired columnist and investor Nicholas Negroponte is hardly surprising. Although currently seeing some success with the One Laptop Per Child program, Negroponte’s past projects have included such dubious endeavors as as Swatch Internet Time.

The award is to be given to the person (or organization) who has “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” The creators of the World Wide Web — Tim Berners-Lee, Larry Roberts and Vint Cerf — have been nominated, too.

The final nominations will be now be considered by the Committee with the winner due to be announced on October 8, while the awards ceremony will take place in December.

With the impending launch of the Apple iPad, the Cupertino-based company's shunning of Adobe Flash technology has been brought to the forefront of technological discussions. While it was one thing to forgo Flash on a small, mobile device such as the iPhone or iPod Touch, some are questioning whether lack of Flash support is going to be a make-it-or-break it feature for the new slate devices arriving next month - devices which, if you believe Apple CEO Steve Jobs - are "better than netbooks."

On the flip side, Apple supporters echo the company's sentiments that "Flash is a CPU hog" and including support for the technology in Apple's mobile line-up would negatively impact battery life.

However, recent tests have put Flash up against HTML5, the new web markup language that eliminates the need for the Adobe plugin. The results of these tests show that this is not a simple black-and-white issue. Is Flash really a CPU hog? Yes, in some cases. But, surprisingly, not all the time. In fact, sometimes HTML5 actually performed worse.

Testing Flash and HTML5

Jan Ozer is an expert in video encoding technologies, has worked in digital video since 1990 and is the author of 13 books related to the subject. Recently, he put HTML5 up against Flash in a series of tests that pitted the two technologies against each other on both the Mac and PC and in different web browsers including Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

The results of the tests in their entirety are published here on StreamingLearningCenter.com. The summary in a nutshell? Flash isn't always a CPU hog, sometimes that honor goes to HTML5.

Some of the highlights of Ozer's findings are below, broken up into both Mac and Windows test results.

Mac Tests

• With Safari, HTML5 was the most efficient and consumed less CPU than Flash using only 12.39% CPU. With Flash 10.0, CPU utilization was at 37.41% and with Flash 10.1, it dropped to 32.07%
• With Google Chrome, Flash and HTML5 were both equally inefficient (both are around 50%)
• With Firefox, Flash was only slightly less efficient than in Safari, but better than in Chrome

Windows Tests

• Safari wouldn't play HTML5 videos, so there was no way to test that. However, Flash 10.0 used 23.22% CPU but Flash 10.1 only used 7.43% CPU
• Google Chrome was more efficient on Windows than Mac. Playback with Flash Player 10.0 was about 24% more efficient than HTML5, while Flash Player 10.1 was 58% more efficient than HTML5.
• On Firefox, Flash 10.1 dropped CPU utilization to 6% from 22% in Flash 10.0
• In IE8, Flash 10.0 used 22.41% CPU and Flash 10.1 used 14.62% CPU

Hardware Acceleration Key to Flash Performance

In analyzing the results of the tests, Ozer determined that the key to better Flash performance was dependent upon whether or not it could access hardware acceleration. This feature, launched in Flash 10.1, allows the plugin to use the graphics processing unit (GPU) on some computers to decode video. Depending on the video card and drivers, (NVIDIA, AMD/ATI and Intel offer products that support this), the video decoding process in Flash 10.1 can now work for all video playback, not just full-screen playback as was available in Flash 10.0.

According to Adobe, hardware acceleration is not supported under either Linux or Mac OS X, the latter because Mac OS X does not expose access to the required APIs. Adobe goes on to say "The Flash Player team will continue to evaluate adding hardware acceleration to Linux and Mac OS X in future releases."

Here's what this all means in layman's terms: Apple isn't allowing Flash to become more efficient on their Mac OS X/Safari platform (or their iPod/iPhone/iPad one, either) by not providing the access to the hardware it needs to reduce its CPU load. Adobe is waiting and watching to see if they do, but, as Ozer says "the ball is in Apple's court."

Will Apple budge? At this point, it's unlikely. In blocking Flash on Apple devices, the company can easily claim that it's simply not an efficient technology...and that's true for now, considering how it's set up. But if the company wanted to allow it and make it work, it seems reasonable to believe that they could. This is what leads some insiders to believe that the decision to block Flash is less of a technological one and more of a business-minded one. After all, if you could easily visit Hulu.com to stream TV shows and movies, then why would you need to buy them from the iTunes Store?

So while Flash's "CPU hogging" may be a contributing factor in Apple's decision to not support the technology on their mobile devices, that's probably not the only reason behind the block.

Waze est le premier GPS social au monde. Il annonce aujourd’hui le lancement de son application sur mobile en France. Disponible sous iPhone, Android et Symbian, ce GPS dispose de nombreuses fonctions assez pratiques rassemblant une communauté d’utilisateurs.

GPS social gratuit et multifonctions

Waze est entièrement gratuit et propose un service de navigation GPS complet assorti d’options de personnalisation poussées : visualisation de trajet en cours seule ou navigation turn by turn, 2D ou 3D, mode jour ou nuit, etc. Jusqu’à présent Waze n’était disponible que sur les cartes américaines et anglaise. Aujourd’hui, Waze est enfin lancé sur le marché français. Un récent partenariat avec Intermap permet par ailleurs à Waze de fournir une première carte du territoire français.

Waze n’est pas un simple GPS, c’est un service complet qui se développe grâce à la communauté d’utilisateurs. Le service de navigation est en phase de construction et nécessite l’implication active des utilisateurs afin de construire les cartes (noms de rues, directions, etc.) Si un conducteur emprunte une route encore non répertoriée par l’application, il n’aura qu’à appuyer sur une icône symbolisée par un bulldozer pour que Waze enregistre le trajet parcouru et mette à disposition de tous les “wazers” une carte améliorée intégrant ce nouveau tronçon dans les 48h. Le service analyse aussi les sens de circulation des utilisateurs afin de définir par exemple si une route est à sens unique ou à double sens. La communauté d’utilisateurs est donc très importante pour que la solution soit la plus performante possible.

Le temps réel joue aussi un grand rôle pour le GPS Social Waze, le service est ainsi capable de reconnaitre un décalage entre une vitesse constatée et la vitesse de limitation de la route et d’en déduire que l’utilisateur est sûrement coincé dans un embouteillage. Les “wazers” peuvent aussi signaler eux-mêmes des événements sur la route (accidents, contrôles routiers, etc.).

Bien sûr toutes les options et paramètres ne peuvent être modifiés que si la voiture est arrêtée, ainsi le conducteur reste bien attentif à sa conduite.

Waze ajoute aussi des fonctions sympatiques comme la possibilité pour un “wazer” d’être visible en temps réel sur les cartes. Ainsi, il sera possible de voir son avatar sur la carte et une fonction “chit-chat” donne la possibilité d’échanger en direct avec les autres “Wazers”.

La dimension communautaire de Waze ne s’arrête pas là, place à la compétition ! Waze entraîne ses membres dans une grande compétition locale et mondiale pour laquelle il faut cumuler des points grâce à ses trajets. Waze a ainsi disposé sur les routes des points de “surprises routières” ainsi que des points de bonus dans les zones où le système à besoin de confirmation, qui récompensent le “wazer” de participer à l’enrichissement de l’application. Il cumule alors des points lui permettant d’avancer dans le classement local et international.

Waze mène également des opérations plus ponctuelles pour animer sa communauté. Aux Etats-Unis pour Thanksgiving et la Saint Valentin, Waze avait ainsi disposé des coffrets trésors renfermant des bons pour des cadeaux “réels”. Pour le lancement de son application française, Waze s’est associé à Amazon et va disposer sur les routes de l’hexagone des coffrets renfermant des cartes-cadeaux pour commander sur le site. Il suffit pour le “wazer” de rouler dessus pour les remporter.

“Avec déjà plus de 600 000 utilisateurs dans 85 pays, nous sommes heureux d’apporter aujourd’hui une version localisée et une base cartographique solide aux wazers français pour leur permettre de s’approprier notre service” commente Ehud Shabtai, co-fondateur. “En couplant service GPS, informations en temps réel et entraide de la communauté, Waze est la première application qui simplifie vraiment leur quotidien sur la route“, conclut-il.

Whenever people mention the random webcam site, Chatroulette, it inevitably leads to talk of how there are certain less-than-desirable webcam chat partners on the service. Some would wager that the guise of anonymity on Chatroulette helps these users feel a bit safer when baring it all. They aren’t as anonymous as they think.

Chatroulette Map is a project that is grabbing the IP addresses of users, along with a screenshot, and then using Geo IP tools to pinpoint them roughly on the map. The site relies on the fact that Chatroulette connects users directly to each other (assumedly in an effort to save bandwidth) and in doing so exposes IP addresses. Most of the screenshots are safe and entertaining, but there are a few of those Not-Safe-For-Work ones mixed in. The site is also a great way to see a small sampling of the concentration of users around the world.

Soft drink brand's new international TV campaign features 'sassy' marionettes dancing to Flashdance song

Diet Coke has moved from singer Duffy to sassy marionettes dancing to She's a Maniac from 1980s movie Flashdance in a new international TV ad campaign.

The multi-million pound TV campaign will introduce Diet Coke's latest brand ambassadors, three "savvy, sophisticated and witty" marionettes called Eleanor, Bernadette and Irene.

Diet Coke's campaign follows in the footsteps of last summer's "Hello You", which featured a group of real-life sassy females, and the high-profile £35m campaign featuring Welsh singer Duffy that launched last February.

The characters, who "love it light", work together at a fashion magazine and "take a spontaneous and light-hearted attitude to whatever life throws at them and not taking things too seriously – just like a real life Diet Coke girl".

The campaign will run in markets across Europe as well as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

It has echoes of the Diet Coke sponsorship idents that the ad agency Mother created last summer to run around the US TV show Ugly Betty, which is also set at a fashion magazine.

These marionettes will also appear later in the year in a series of 10 second "blipverts" and form part of a wider campaign that will embrace social media, radio, on-pack and outdoor advertising.

"Fashion, femiminity and fun is at the centre of our brand," said Cathryn Sleight, marketing director for Coca Cola. "The television commercial stands for and talks to our drinkers in a light-hearted and uplifting way."
